I know it’s hard to believe, but Las Vegas (AKA Sin City) has just as much culture as, well, casinos. This week-end the desert hills are alive with the sound of music. FREE.

Tomorrow night the Henderson Symphony Orchestra performs Scheherazade by Nikolay Andreyevich Rimsky-Korsakov, a Russian naval officer who had nothing to do with the 2016 election. You’re probably more familiar with his work The Flight of the Bumble Bee, which you heard sometime during the sixth grade.

Rimsky-Korsakov wrote this symphonic suite in 1888. (Same period as The Alienist on TNT, if you’re watching.)

It describes in music the story of Sheherazade, a story that really belongs on Netflix. The Persian king discovered his wife was unfaithful. After dispatching her to the hereafter, he decided to marry a new virgin every day after beheading the previous day’s wife. (I am not making this up!) He killed 1,000 women when he met Scheherazade.

She asked if she could say farewell to her sister, who she told to ask the new wife to tell a story. The king listened to the first story. Sheherazade was in the middle of the engagin tale when dawn broke. The king wanted to know what happened, but Scherherazade refused because the sun was shining.

So the king granted her one more day to hear the conclusion of her fabulous tale. This went on for 1,001 nights (the stories included Ali Baba, Aladdin and Arabian nights.) Scheheradaze then announced she had no more stories to tell. By then the king had fallen in love with her and they lived happily ever after. Amen.

Since it’s still too cold to sit outside at the Henderson Pavilion, the summer home of the Symphony, this concert is at the Grand Events Center at Green Valley Ranch Station Casino. I did say the performance is FREE. And so is parking!!!!
