4-Letter Friday: FREE Fun in Las Vegas

Happy New Years, Las Vegas. Hard to believe it’s already here!

As we locals know, everything about New Year’s Eve in Las Vegas is expensive.

You know NOTHING on the Strip will be free New Year’s Eve! I can assure you the performances by Lady Gaga, Gwen Stefani, Calvin Harris and Bruno Mars are far from FREE.

So your faithful scribe has sussed out some FREE, yes you read that right, FREE things to do this New Year’s Eve. All are downtown.

  1. The Mob Museum

Yes, there were many benefits to the mob running Las Vegas. And they keep on giving. The Mob Museum is providing FREE, yes, you read that right, FREE admission to its basement speakeasy, The Underground. There is a catch: you have to use the password “Get zozzled.” The doors open at 9 pm and lock you out at 1 am.

The entrance to the speakeasy is on the east side of the building. Take the stairs underground.

2. Downtown Grand

The casino is hosting a 90’s House Party FREE, yes, you read that right, FREE. Joey Lawrence is hosting the evening.  There will be Nirvana (music by the band but the party may be Nirvana-esque as well), Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Hootie and the Blowfish before Darius Rucker went country–what a great decade of music.

Dancing and drinking start at 8. The festivities won’t shut down until 2 am.

3. Fireworks from The Plaza

Grucci & Co. will be setting off fireworks at seven Strip casinos. The Plaza is the only downtown hotel participating. Lucky for you, you can see the stellar fireworks show from the sidewalk outside either of these two venues.

Like last year, the Gruccis will unleash 80,000 fireworks during the eight-minute show. That’s about 150 fireworks per second. Sounds like it’s worth stayin’ up for!

Warning: Parking is NOT FREE. Best place to park is the city garage, called the Fremont Street Experience Parking Garage. Six dollars every two hours. Just don’t back in. You will get a ticket even though there are NO signs. (Yes, I know that from experience and I’m still mad about it!)

This is one night a year I’d use Parkopedia. The app shows how many parking spots are available and the hourly price. You can even reserve a spot online. Just download it from your favorite app store. FREE!!!!

Have a happy and safe New Year’s Eve, Las Vegas. We will be back in force in 2019!
