Yes, Virginia, you can garden in Las Vegas!
Newcomers to Las Vegas think the landscape is 50 shades of brown. Nay! Nay! I say. When I moved here from very green Texas, I had to learn a whole new way of gardening. Now I love my colorful lantannas in lieu of grass. And I grow the most delicious peaches and Meyer lemons on the planet.
If you want to learn how to garden in the desert, wake up early tomorrow and “go learn something” as Agent Dwayne Pride says on NCIS New Orleans. The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Jodi Starkey is hosting a FREE session at Acacia Park.
The topic is seasonal: how to prepare your yard for winter. Freezing isn’t the issue here in Las Vegas; it’s extreme fluctuations in temperature. (Yes, you can turn on the AC during the day and crank up the heat after sundown. Welcome to the high desert.) She will also discuss how to protect your pipes. (Sorry, plumbers.)
Henderson’s Parks and Recreation Department is the co-host.
The session starts at 9 am.
P.S. Gardening is important to increasing the investment in your homes. Buyers love lush landscaping. Your house may sell for more, faster if you get this planting thing down.
