Las Vegas is known for its live music. This week-end, for instance, 400,000 people are in town for the Electric Daisy Festival to celebrate electronic dance and trance music.
Jazz fusion lovers will be out in force tomorrow night to hear Spyro Grya, my all-time favorite fusion jazz band. Spryo Gyra, which Billboard labeled “the most successful jazz artist of the 1980s,” will perform FREE at Las Vegas’s Jazz in the Park Series.
The Clark County Government Center Amphitheater is the site. Bring your own dinner or purchase food and drink from the food trucks.
This is year 27 for the Jazz festival. I love lying in the grass and looking up at the twinkling stars while the strains of live jazz envelope me.
Concert seating begins at 6; the show starts at 7. Extreme Measures opens the show.
Parking is free, too.
P.S. So what is a Spyro Gyra? Saxophonist Jay Beckenstein formed a band playing in Buffalo in 1974. The bar owner asked the name of the band. Beckenstein was fascinated with a strain of algae called spirogyra. The bar owner spelled it Spyro Gyra. And the rest, as they say, is history.
