Next week-end is Memorial Day, so locals probably are going to avoid downtown until the throngs of tourists who pay our school taxes (Love them tourists!) venture home. So go downtown tonight Vegas!
Tonight is a great night for a stroll through the Downtown Container Park. If you haven’t been that far down Fremont Street East yet, you are missing one of the most endearing, kooky things in Vegas. It’s the brainchild of brilliant Tony Hsieh, he of Zappos fame and fortune.
Downtown Container Park is just what the moniker says: containers piled on top of one another three levels high to create a funky shopping center. There are seven restaurants, lots of stores and a plaza for FREE music. You are greeted by my fav: the fire-breathing preying mantis.
The 40-foot long sculpture comes to life each night with some mechanical movement and fearsome fire shooting out of its antennae. It’s controlled by an operator who will often wait for opportune moments to often scare the you-know-what out of unsuspecting passersby. You can feel the heat and hear the ominous flashes a block away.
The festivities start with a drum circle around the sculpture, aka kids banging on stuff. Trust me, you gotta see, hear and feel this Vegas beast.
Tonight The Wild Sparrows and the Orange Feathers, two local bands, perform starting at 7. However, everyone has to turn 21 when the clock hits 9 pm because adults start (continue) drinking.
Have a great week-end, Las Vegas.
