4-Letter Friday:FREE Fun in Las Vegas

Beth Ellyn Rosenthal, eXp Realty

Do you watch all the cooking challenges on TV?  Want to watch a live  food competition in Las Vegas for FREE?

Head to the Fremont Street Experience in downtown Las Vegas to watch 500 cooks compete for $300,000 in the World Food Championships

What’s fun about this competition is it pits the “Joes” against the “Pros.” People from all over the world have competed in regional events to qualify for a position in the Las Vegas finals.

Last year’s champion

The cooking categories this year include:

  • Barbecue
  • Open chili
  • Burger
  • Dessert
  • Sandwich
  • Bacon
  •  Recipe (this year’s theme is cheese.)
  • Pasta
  • Seafood
  • Chef (21 pros have signed up so far.)

This is a tournament-style competition. The winners of each category meet on Tuesday for the Final Table competition, where one will become the new champion, ending the reign of Dave Elliott.

I attended last year and it was wild. In between the casinos are 500 identical cooking stations. The competitors rush around in a frenzy, just like on the Food Network. But add one more element of frisson when you are actually there. You can smell everything cooking!

All this is FREE. However, if you want to taste some of the food, that costs money. Here are two cool events:

  • Bourbon, BBQ & Banjos. This happens from 6-8 today at the Downtown Las Vegas Events Center. Live music will inspire the 50 pro teams competing for the best barbecue crown. Here you, the eaters, are the judges. Cost is $25.
  • Cocktails and Champions. Celebrate the nine category winners with a menu prepared by 11-time World Pizza Champion Tony Gemignani. The event will be at Pizza Rock. Tickets cost $50.

Las Vegas, enjoy this delicious event.
