FREE Fun in Las Vegas: 4-Letter Friday

THANK goodness we have a three-day week-end after the deliciously Las Vegas craziness of the Super Bowl. Slash, Justin Bieber and Andrea Bocelli (I told you we have everything here in Las Vegas) are the expensive entertainers on the Strip this week-end.

But it is my job, dear readers, to find you things to do that are both FUN and FREE.

Buckle up because here we go!

Calling all Chihauhuas (Downtown)

If you own one, meet your fellow owners. Illustration: Dog & Whistle

I love all dogs (except pit bulls because they actually scare me). But some people are monomaniacal about their favorite breed. If you have a chihuahua, those little dogs who think they are big dogs and have a Texas-sized personality, come meet your fellow humans.

And your dogs can meet their newest canine friends.

Dog & Whistle is hosting a chihuahua meet up this Sunday at its pop up Le Pup Cafe. Bring your dog on a lease. The paw-ty is FREE.

Dog & Whistle is a Las Vegas-based company that crafts dog food from 100% natural, whole foods. According to its website, “every ingredient has a purpose.” The company boasts it is reducing the carbon paw print. (As someone who is the pooper scooper in my household, the real question is: Does their food reduce the poop? But I digress.)

The company hosts these meet-ups for different breeds. The last one was for Corgi owners.

You don’t have to own a dog of the highlighted breed to enjoy the event. The District at Green Valley Ranch used to welcome the Las Vegas pug owners once a month. It was great fun to go and mingle. Pugs have such personalities.

P.S. I feed a labradoodle and an Irish setter.

From 11 to 1 outside the store.

Down Dog for Kids (Downtown)

Speaking of dogs, how about doing down dogs with your young uns?

After a pandemic pause, Future Makers is bringing back Kids Yoga. The introduction to yoga class is for humans of all ages. So parents can do cat and cow with their kids!

My yoga studio actually has dog yoga classes. You do yoga poses with your dog. Of course I’ve done goat yoga too.

Me at goat yoga

But sharing yoga with your children can become a lifelong tradition. Austin, who is 44, and I do Peloton yoga every afternoon at 4 when we are together. (We started doing this much later in life when he retired.)

Jessica Castillo of Blooming Minds leads the kids yoga class.

The class is outside every Sunday at 9 am at Fergusons Downtown. You have to bring your own mat. I’d bring an exercise mat to put under your yoga mat since you will be on the grass.

Namaste.

Salsa the Night Away at the Gold Spike (Downtown)

The best way to finish off a week-end. Illustration: Gold Spike

Latin dancing is HOT! This Sunday the Gold Spike is launching Beso Latin Sundays.

DJs Gil Barba & Dorna Rich are spinning Latin heat all night long. Gringas like me know and love many of these songs from our Zumba classes. I can Zumba salsa dance!

The party starts at 10 pm. Admission is FREE until 11:30. But that’s OK because you probably need to go home and get ready for Monday. (Sunday is a school night for me….)

There will be a hookah. VIP tables are also available if you have deeper pockets.

Banish the Blues with the Blues at the Sand Dollar (West)

Booking blues bands since 1976 Illustration: The Sand Dollar

I grew up in Chicago. In the 1960s we went to the clubs on Halstead Street to hear this kewl new blues band called BB King.

The Sand Dollar’s Lounge has a similar pedigree. It has been booking blues bands since 1976.

Tonight Soul Juice Band takes the stage. Ten talented local musicians make up the group. Their big blues sound starts at 10 pm.

The music is FREE. However, I’m betting you can’t resist the ah-maz-ing pizza, which is NOT free.

Have a great week-end Las Vegas.
