March Madness is here. Welcome visitors. The basketball tournament is now THE most visited week-ends in Las Vegas, ousting both Super Bowl (formerly No. 1) and New Year’s Eve. (Now No. 3).
But there’s plenty to do if you prefer to watch hoops on TV.
Las Vegas is one of the entertainment capitals of the world. But many of the shows on the Strip are truly spendy.
It is MY job, dear readers, to find FREE fun for you this week-end. Buckle up! ‘Cause here we go!
Watch Police Dogs in Action and Be Awed (South)

All y’all know by now the story of my Ladradoodle Bensley. I rescued him at six months. No one wanted him because he was so badly beaten that he was as scared as the lion in Wizard of Oz.
I took him to MPK9 for training to give him some courage. Eventually Bensley became a protection pet. He actually kept a drunk stranger from trying to strangle me and flushed out drugged out squatters when I was showing property.
Bensley is amazing. But there is no comparison to well-trained police dogs. OMG. They stop on a dime from a full run when their handler says the word. Ditto for biting the decoy in the bite suit.
Tomorrow at the South Point Las Vegas the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is hosting its 30th annual K-9 Trials. Police dogs and their handlers come from all over America to participate.
The event happens all week-end but the public part is Sunday at 10.
It is a joy to watch. And much more fun than the ballet!
The categories are:
- Narcotics
- Bombs
- Obedience
- Agility
- Handler protection
The general admission tickets are FREE. You have to register though at http://lvmpdfoundation.org/k9trials.
In the past there have been merch tables for kewl stuff for your dog.
Tap Your Feet at the Spring Forward Family Music Festival (Henderson)

Speaking of training….
Since Las Vegas is a music festival crazed town, it’s best to train your kids early how to behave at music festivals. (No, you may not put a Starmark police collar on your children.)
Tomorrow (Saturday) Henderson is hosting its Spring Forward Family Music Festival. (We sprang forward last week-end but I guess they wanted to make sure everyone got there at the right time. Actually I really think this is something for the rest of the family to do while college basketball fanatics are glued to the TV. Yes, that would be me.)
The city of Henderson promises the entertainment will delight children of all ages. (Even us Boomers.) Magician The Amazing Max is the MC.
New acts perform for an hour. The Amazing Max does his thing between every act.
The festival starts at 10 and goes to 5.
Of course the festival is FREE. My Henderson property taxes at work. You’re welcome.
Eat FREE Cookies (Henderson)

Vegas is becoming a sport town. But I believe the locals will always have a soft sport in their hears for hockey, the first major sports team to relocate here. (Even though very few knew where the crease was.)
Tomorrow (Saturday) Pucks Cookies & Treats, a hockey-obsessed cookie store, has its official ribbon cutting. The cutting itself is at 11. But the festivities don’t conclude until 5.
There will be a DJ, roller dancers and live music. All FREE.
If you want to eat FREE cookies, sign up for the cookie-eating contest.
If you do want to sample the tempting treats, all goodies are 15% off both Friday and Saturday.
If you want a local bar to watch March Madness FREE, I suggest Lazy Dog Restaurant and Bar. https://www.google.com/maps/place/Lazy+Dog+Restaurant+%26+Bar/@36.1528429,-115.3360119,17z/data=!3m2!4b1!5s0x80c8be54814cfc79:0x1f25ff0daedfc83f!4m9!1m2!2m1!1slazy+dogvegas!3m5!1s0x80c8be54816f8775:0x78ee861c2f6c1bbf!8m2!3d36.1528386!4d-115.3338232!15sCg5sYXp5IGRvZyB2ZWdhcyIDiAEBWhAiDmxhenkgZG9nIHZlZ2FzkgETYW1lcmljYW5fcmVzdGF1cmFudA?hl=en&authuser=0
This is my Google review.
Have a March Madness week-end, Las Vegas.
