Welcome to the July 4 Trainer Week-end. It takes time to get ready for the big four-day week-end just seven days away. Can’t wait!
Las Vegas has sooo much to do. The shows to see this week-end are Steve Martin and Martin Short or Derek Hough. But they cost big bucks. My job, dear readers is to find FREE things for you to do this week-end. And there are plenty!
Buckle up ‘case here we go.
Listen to Live Music at the Sand Dollar Downtown (Downtown)
In the old days (like 20 years ago) I used to hang at the Sand Dollar Lounge. It is a deliciously seedy, 1950s-esque bar that had the best live jazz and blues in town. Shows started at 10 and went into the wee hours.
The Plaza Hotel invited the owners to open a second venue. Like the original, the lounge offers FREE live music every night. It has a better sound system, seats 300 instead of 50 and has a killer bar.
Tonight Jimmy Carpenter, an accomplished saxaphone player, and his band take the stage. They specialize in blues and R&B. The show starts at 10.
Tomorrow Unique Massive, a jazz fusion band, rules the room. This show starts at 9.
Sunday a bluegrass group, Bigfoot Country, takes over. They strike up the band at 9 as well.
I’ll trade the old school flavor and beat up tables for the new, improved version.
P.S. There’s plenty of parking but you do have to pay.
Learn to Line Dance at Stoney’s Rockin’ Country (South) or Gilley’s Saloon (Las Vegas Strip)
I refuse to refute my Texas roots, Greg Abbott notwithstanding. Yes, you can take the girl out of Texas but you can’t take Texas out of the girl.
When I moved to Las Vegas, I missed my local honkey tonks. I first hung out at the dance hall at Boulder Station, now long gone.
Then I drove to the Las Vegas Strip to Gilley’s Saloon, Dance Hall & Bar-B-Cue, now at Treasure Island, for the live country music and FREE dance lessons.
There is NO cover. FREE!
Gilley’s features “Bluegrass and BBQ” on Fridays and Saturdays. The live bluegrass band starts at 5 pm and the main act goes live at 10 pm.
But the doors open at noon on Fridays and Saturdays, 2 pm Sundays if you want to two-step the afternoon away.
This week-end the Bluegrass Republic is the bluegrass band and Scotty Alexander is the country act.
Free line dance lessons are always from 7-8 pm but only during the week. No lessons on the week-end.
P.S. Gilley’s has some of the best barbecue in Vegas. That’s not free.
And then Stoney opened Stoney’s Rockin’ Country, five minutes from my home. How lucky can you get?
You have to have $10 and an ID (they check everyone) to get in. Here’s what you get: live music and two FREE line dance lessons.
Tonight Josh Mirenda performs. His show starts at 10 after the dance lessons. He won ASCAP song of the year for “Somewhere on the Beach” that Dierks Bentley recorded.
Line dance lessons are at 7:30 and 8:30 pm. Tonight’s featured dances are couples Cowboy Cha-Cha (one of my favs) and 2-step. If you don’t have a partner, the dance teacher will find you one.
Tomorrow the line dances are Caliente and 18-step.
I have taken country and dance lessons since 1983. I can safely say Stoney’s employs some of the best dance teachers ever. They can take folks with two-left feet and make them Dancing with the Stars ready (well, almost.)
Line dances are sacred at Stoney’s. The DJ clears the floor for the line dancers when it’s their turn. This is a big deal because there is sometimes friction with the country dancers for real estate.
Doors open at 7.
Try it. All y’all (plural for y’all if you don’t speak Texan) will have fun.
Get Some Culture and Have an “Art Attack” (Las Vegas Strip)
I just returned from eXp Realty’s 2022 Shareholder Summit. I was a speaker. One of our fellow eXp University instructors volunteered to learn how to make a TikTok live. We showed her how to do it in real time. (Check out bethellynvegas.)
The feedback is it was one the most entertaining sessions of the conference.
Stephen Fishwick is doing the same thing. He calls his performance an “Art Attack“. Tomorrow (Saturday) he will showcase his talents in a live show that incorporates art, music and movement.
During the show he transforms a blank canvas into iconic images, choreographed to music. Everyone apparently dances alongside him as he paints. He says he “wants to share the electric euphoria he gets from painting live on stage.”
You can use those line dancing steps to show off your moves. Just saying.
Sometimes he brings his cat.
Park West Gallery is in the Forum Shops at Caesars Palace. And sadly the parking there is not FREE.
Eat (almost) FREE Food at McDonald’s (Henderson)
Saturday McDonald’s is opening a new store in Henderson.
One hundred lucky guests will receive Big Macs or Happy Meals for a year. All you have to do is get lucky spinning a roulette wheel.
You can enjoy a Big Mac or a Hamburger Happy Meal for $1.99. Who remembers those prices????
The store is located at 3452 St. Rose Parkway. From 11-3.
Have a great week-end, Las Vegas.
