Guten Tag meine Damen und Herren. Zeit fur Oktoberfest!
The world’s most famous beer festival starts this week-end. But there is plenty to do if beer is not your thing because this is Las Vegas!
Our very own Imagine Dragons are at Allegiant Stadium. Fortunately the tickets are reasonably priced ($39 to $289). Most tickets to primo performers are tres cher.
But because the bench is deep, there are a lot of FREE events. It’s my job to share them with you.
Buckle up ’cause here we go!
Prost! It’s Time for Oktoberfest (off Strip)
In the summer of 1974 I arrived in Munich on my way to Bavaria to study the German language at a Goethe Institut. I, of course, had to visit the famous Hofbrauhaus.
While I was there sampling great beer, Germany just happened to win the FIFA World Cup. I’ve been in Dallas when the Cowboys won the Super Bowl. But the celebration was never like this. What a wild night. One of the most memorable nights of my life!
But I digress.
I still don’t know why Oktoberfest really happens in September.
The festivities start tonight in Las Vegas. Las Vegas Mayor Caroline Goodman taps the first keg at 7:30.
A different Las Vegas celebrity taps a keg every Friday and Saturday night during Oktoberfest, which runs through Halloween.
- Musician Michael Grimm
- Magician Jen Kramer (She’s a Yalie like me. See not everyone becomes a doctor, lawyer or Indian chief although in my class we have a Nobel prize winner in economics, a US Senator and Oscar winner and well me….)
- The shirtless Chippendales
- Equal time to the women of Fantasy (with their tops on)
- Musical group Human Nature
- Drag queens Larry Edwards & Roxy Brooks
- Musician and songwriter Frankie Moreno
- Strip stars The Bronx Wanderers
Watching these shenanigans is FREE. So is the umpah band, the Biermeister Band, who create authentic live German music, wearing lederhosen and all.
The beer, alas, is not free. But it’s worth the price. You can drink Oktoberfestbier, with 6.3 percent alcohol by volume, right here in Las Vegas. It’s the same beer they are drinking over there in the Vaterland.
For the record, Mayor Goodman is the mayor of the city of Las Vegas, which includes downtown. The Las Vegas Strip is in Clark County and is controlled by the Clark County Commissioners. Just for the record.
Celebrate Mexican Independence Day with a Heavy Metal Mariachi Band (Downtown)
Sometimes unusual pairings make a stellar concoction. Like chocolate and cabernet. Or watching House of Dragons and Emily in Paris back-to-back.
So mixing mariachi with heavy metal sounds…delicious. That’s the music Metalachi makes. Gravedad, a local Latin rock n’ roll fusion band, is the opening act.
You can hear them FREE at Downtown Container Park tomorrow Saturday. The show starts at 10 pm on the stage and lawn. The opening act begins at 8.
Metalachi is there to celebrate Mexican Independence Day.
The concert is FREE but you must be 21 to attend.
The Lawn is offering all-you-can-drink beer packages for $30.
Enjoy a Taste of the Hawaiian Islands (Henderson)
Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalaniana’ole was the last person who could claim the throne of the Hawaiian monarchy.
Hawaii became a US territory in 1893. Prince Jonah was elected to the US Congress in 1901. He is beloved by the Hawaiians.
Tonight and tomorrow the Las Vegas Hawaiian Civic Club and the city of Henderson honor the Prince with the Prince Kuhio Ho’alaule’a & Pacific Island Festival.
Water Street Plaza will try to become an island paradise (in the desert.) There will be authentic island food, handmade crafts, Polynesian villages and cultural entertainment.
For example, tonight Hot Lava (love the name) performs Tahitian dances.
Tomorrow the Lohan School of Shaolin will perform a lion dance. Latitude 20 (another great name!) will also perform live music.
The festival is FREE.
Tonight the event goes from 5 to 9. Tomorrow it’s 9 to 9. Aloha ohana!
Don’t forget our Raiders play the Chargers Sunday. Go to any sports bar in town and scream!
Have a great week-end, Las Vegas!
