It’s the weekend before Christmas! How did we get here so fast???? I know with the out-of-towners arriving tomorrow, the shopping left to do, the cooking on the back burner, you need a break for fun, right? And FREE works right now with all those holiday gifts on this month’s credit card….
Las Vegas entertainment can be pricey. After all, the world’s top entertainers love working here. But us locals know exactly where you can enjoy world-class entertainment for FREE. That special local, your sherpa, is me.
Buckle up ’cause here we go.
Hear Holiday Music with a New Twist (Downtown)
I love Christmas music. But by Christmas I have had enough since all the radio stations have been playing it since Thanksgiving. My radio dial is now stuck on Watercolors Channel 66 on Sirius XM because the jazz folks at least make the tunes interestingly different.
Which is why I plan on attending this FREE concert on Saturday night from the Vegas City Opera. Full disclosure: I am not an opera fan although I do like Verdi’s Aida because it has elephants in it. But the one thing you can say about opera performers is they have THE best voices on the planet.
The show, called “A Very POPera Holiday,” will feature “modern and classic holiday hits with a twist,” which is what excited me.
The other attractive thing is the arranger is Bill Fayne. He was the founder of the Las Vegas Tenors and Clint Holmes‘s musical director when he had his own show at Harrah’s Las Vegas. He is a musical genius. He’s also Jewish, so I’m sure there will be a Hanukah song in there somewhere.
The free concert is at 7 pm at the Historic Fifth Street School downtown. I’ve seen the students perform many Broadway musicals there. The auditorium matches many of the Strip showrooms. Great acoustics.
Light the Menorah and (Hopefully) Win Some Hannukah Gelt (Henderson)
Speaking of Hanukah, the festival of lights starts this Sunday at sundown. For those of you not familiar, you light a candle every night for seven nights. Kids are supposed to get a gift every night.
Adults get Hanukah Gelt. Gelt, of course, is German for money. With raging inflation, who couldn’t use a little extra Gelt? (The Germans capitalize all nouns for some reason. But I digress.)
Which is why I was intrigued that The District at Green Valley Ranch include Gelt (uncapitalized. Obviously the PR folks don’t speak German like moi) in their release about their Menorah Lighting Ceremony.
There will be live entertainment in addition to the Gelt giveaway. All FREE.
From 6 to 8. At the entrance of Main Street between Shake Shack and REI. Plenty of FREE parking too.
If you want to hear awesome klezmer music, the Klezmatics have a Hanukah concert at the Water Street Plaza Amphitheater on Sunday. This group has won Grammys, people. Their concert is NOT free, however. You’ll have to fork over $20 per ticket.
P.S. All y’all know klezmer music. You’ve seen Fiddler on the Roof!
Show starts at 3.
Rock out at Blairfest (Downtown)
Blair Newport Dewane was a Vegas legend. He played with many of the local bands for forever. He died this year at the sad age of 36. His obituary said “he had the triple threat of charisma, wit and heart.” He was a great guitarist, too.
His band mates have put together a Blairfest this weekend at the Plaza Hotel and Casino. The two night celebration is FREE.
Both shows are at the Plaza Hotel and Casino. The Sand Dollar Downtown put together the festival. The music is in the Showroom. Doors both nights open at 6.
This is one of the reasons I LOVE living in Las Vegas. We are really a small community actually committed to one another.
Show OFF Your Ugly Christmas Sweater (Henderson)
What is Christmas without an ugly sweater contest?
Head to Lake Las Vegas’s Reflection Bay Golf Club today for its annual Ugly Christmas Sweater Contest.
In addition to the contest, there will be a live choir performance and FREE appetizers. You can roast marshmallows over an open fire on the beach.
In the spirit of the season, the golf club asks you to bring a new or gently used sweater to donate to the Las Vegas Rescue Mission.
You do have to register: http://bitly/3BfGF6D
Have a great weekend, Las Vegas.
