FREE Fun in Las Vegas: 4-Letter Friday

Once upon a time, in a galaxy far, far away, this weekly blog shared all the kewl FREE things to do in Las Vegas. You could live like a local!

These days it’s my job to find you things to do, period.

Look up at the sky

The Neowise comet

Tonight and tomorrow night are the best times to catch a glimpse at the Neowise comet. Check it out an hour or two after sunset until about 10 pm.

Look northwest right below the Big Dipper.

Do it this week-end. It won’t be back for 6,800 more years. I’d assume you won’t be around then to get a mulligan.

Of course, it’s easiest to see if you get out of the light pollution that is Las Vegas. Seek higher, darker ground. It’s super dark heading to Spring Mountain Ranch State Park, the home of my favorite Super Summer Theater.

Just head west on Charleston from the 215 at Red Rock Casino. You’re head out to Red Rock National Conservation Area.

Mars

Mars

When you say Mars here in Las Vegas, locals think you are talking about Ethel M Chocolates, because Mars Inc. owns the brand.

But I am talking about Mars, the planet.

Today is actually Mars Day, an annual celebration launched by the National Air and Space Museum. Today the museum is having a digital scavenger hunt across Mars. And tonight the museum is hosting a talk about human colonization of Mars.

The docents are also going to talk about star-gazing in general. (Not the Hollywood kind.)

Tune in to the museum’s Instagram feed. Or visit airandspace.si.ed/mars-day.

National Ice Cream Day

My three favorite flavors!

Sunday is National Ice Cream Day. Many providers are offering free ice cream. Here are some options:

  • Yogurtland: Buy one, get one FREE Sunday until 6 pm
  • Johnny Rockets: Get a FREE milkshake with the purchase of an entree
  • Petsmart: This is for dogs only. Dogs get a 4-ounce scoop of doggy-safe ice cream topped with a dog biscuit. Saturday and Sunday.

Have a great (and safe) week-end, Las Vegas.
