Once upon a time, in a galaxy far, far away, people in Las Vegas could go to concerts and plays. I, your humble scribe, would share all the kewl things to do for FREE in this pricey capital of entertainment.
Now, my four months of house arrest might turn into 12 more. So the goal now is to keep you entertained on week-ends since we fortunately can get back to work (but the new ways of work.)
Camus wrote in The Stranger, he could get used to living in a hollow tree with just a patch of blue sky up above by degrees. That’s how I feel now.
On to the fun.
Dance Dance Dance
During the pandemic I decided to do three things: write a book, conquer Facebook’s Ad Manager and learn how to twerk. Hey, twerking is important!
And I am proud to report I have completed all three. The book is called The RIPPA Method. How to Invest in Your Future When You Know Nothing About Investing. I am self-publishing and it will be out by Christmas. Facebook is happily taking my money.
And now I can twerk thanks to Shawnta’ Jackson.
Jackson is a choreographer, dancer and fitness teacher. This woman can do more than twerk, I promise you. She and her buddy Kim teach hip hop dance classes twice a week on line on their Facebook page, Body by Shawnta’.
Then they post them on Jackson’s YouTube channel.
I admit I am now addicted. For someone who grew up on country music, dancing to hip hop is certainly a stretch. But the classes are really fun. Jackson is wild and crazily motivating. I can’t move my hips like those two but I am getting there.
Most important, these classes make me astonishingly happy. Dance. Dance. HAPPY.
And yes, the classes are FREE.

Tie dying was THE thing to do when I was a teenager. The pandemic is reigniting interest in this uber fun activity. Things to do!
Sunday gather an old T-shirt and some uneaten beets. Hillary Taymour, the creative director of Colina Strada, is holding an on-line class. She will share step-by-step instructions on how to make a tie died shirt.
If die dying isn’t your thing, want to learn how to make a fancy tote bag from a dish towel? Sounds fun and a option from those $61,000 Birkin bags. The founders of Rodarte, Laura and Kate Mulleavy, teach this class.
Just to to this web site for these classes: nytimes.com/issue/fashion/2020/06/19/designer-diy.
The classes are FREE and you can watch any time. So if it’s 2 am and you’ve had enough of Netflix, take out that clean old dish towel and enjoy!
Pre-pandemic, going to trivia night at my favorite bar was a weekly joy. If you have $7 (almost FREE), you can play online with people from all over the world.
Atlas Obscura holds a global trivia night every Friday night. You can play solo or with as many as four other people.
Who knows, you might make a new friend in say Aruba.
Got to atlasobscura.com/experiences to buy your ticket and play.
P.S. If one of the trivia questions is, “Who learned to twerk during the pandemic?” The answer is me.
Have a great week-end, Las Vegas.
