Once upon a time, in a galaxy far, far away, Las Vegas was one of the entertainment capitals of the world. Then this deadly invisible thingy appeared and live entertainment became a cherished memory. At least the bars open Monday, but I digress.
But that doesn’t mean there aren’t tons of FREE things to do in Las Vegas this week-end. The city’s deep bench of entertainers will keep you…entertained! (Sadly, our Vegas Golden Knights won’t this year.)
Mike Jones Jazz Piano

Need some rousing, smoothing jazz piano music Friday night after work?
Mike Jones is doing a live concert on his Facebook page at 6 pm.
Jones is the music director for the Penn & Teller show at the Rio. If you’ve been to the show, you’ve seen him play standards and classics the hour before the show (so show up early!) and then throughout the show. He duets, TikTok style, with Penn before the show too.
Jones says he plays the piano “like each of his fingers are Usain Bolt.” He says he’s a “two-handed” pianist. Usually the right hand is the virtuoso and the left hand just provides the deep bass structure. Not here. His left hand is crazy too. He has two right hands!
Can I pun and say his music is magical?

Rosh Hashanah

Tonight is erev Rosh Hashanah, the start of the Jewish New Year. Here’s my secret: The best part about being Jewish, after Bubbie’s (grandmother in Yiddish) matzoh ball soup, is you get to celebrate THREE new years: calender, Chinese and Jewish. Fun! Fun! Fun!
I am Jewish by culinary. My bubbie was THE most amazing cook. If you want to bake my Rosh Hashanah honey cake, go to my Facebook page Beth Ellyn The Eater Extraordinaire for the recipe. Tradition is you are supposed to eat something sweet to assure you will have a sweet and delicious year ahead.
Of course I am being flip. If you you want to celebrate and enjoy the beautiful and actually moving service, join Rabbi Daniel Brenner. He’s holding services at the Brooklyn Bowl. That’s why it starts at 4:30 Friday. (Sundown in New York City.)
What’s interesting about this service is he’s teamed up with Jordan McLean, who is the co-founder of Antibalas, an Afrobeat band. Together they host what they are calling the “High Holiday 2020 series.”
Watch at fans.com.
P.S. You don’t have to be Jewish to enjoy the wonder of the Rosh Hashanah service or my honey cake.
Drive in movie

AMC Theaters have opened their doors, but I am too chicken to set foot inside. But I can still see a movie on Friday nights, thanks to Clark County Parks & Recreation and TruVision Cinema.
The program is called the “Mobile Drive-In Movie Series.” It’s FREE.
Friday’s movie is The Little Rascals at the Hollywood Community Center The Little Rascals.
The parking lot opens at 6. The movie will start screening after dark at 7:45.
You can bring your own chair but you have to keep it in your parking lot space. And you have to put on your mask the minute you step out of your car.
Happy New Year. Good yontif. Have a safe and healthy week-end, Las Vegas.
((hugs)) BETH Ellyn
