Las Vegas purports to be the Entertainment Capital of the World. And it is (or pretty close.) However, much of this entertainment is very pricey. My job, dear readers, is to find FREE fun for you. Because you know my favorite four-letter word is FREE.
Since the delta variant is hitting Las Vegas hard (the two-week positivity rate is now 15.7%, up from 3.3% in June. So a couple of my offerings are outside where it’s safer. (If you want to know about my risk tolerance, read my blog on micromorts.)
Celebrate the Taverna Costera Grand Opening

The restaurant complex opened May 30 in the Arts District. But the grand opening is tomorrow.
Chef Ray Samlow has created three food spaces that sum up the best of the Mediterranean. First, there’s the Tarverna, serving coastal specialities from French, Spanish, Italian and Greek cuisines.
Then there’s Dragon’s Alleyn Coffee Co. It serves cold brew coffee, boba drinks and unusual teas. It closes late like the bar.
You can dine streetside, at the indoor/outdoor bar or in the building’s courtyard, making it a good choice for delta covid dining.
And then there’s The Roof @ Taverna Costera. It’s worth the trek for the jaw-dropping views of downtown Las Vegas. To date it’s the biggest stage in the Arts District, which, to be fair, is not that big since most venues there are pretty cozy.
The grand opening party is on the roof. The Dirty Hooks, The Imposions and Frankie Lee & The Infernos will provide the live music. Starts at 8. FREE.
But if you show up at 3, there is a FREE tapas menu tasting until 6. It’s in the restaurant’s dining room.
Soar Like An Eagle at the Naughty Ladies Saloon

Arizona Charlie’s Decatur is the quintessential old-style Las Vegas casino. It’s located in an older neighborhood right off the 95, one of the oldest city freeways.
Back then, all casinos had to have a dance hall/lounge. Arizona Charlies’s is called Naughty Ladies Saloon. I have to admit in the early 2000s, it was my favorite place to dance the night away on a rollicking Saturday night.
That’s saying a lot, since I lived in Henderson. The Las Vegas Strip was way closer.
But the Saloon always booked the best local bands. ere in Las Vegas, they have star power because this city is a magnet for talented musicians.
You can hear rock n’ roll, covers, country.
No one has been naughty for awhile because of covid. But the Saloon opens tomorrow night. American Eagles USA, an Eagles cover band.
The admission is always FREE. Doors open at 8. You must be 21 because the liquor flows freely.
Another First Friday

It’s First Friday time again. The theme is “Good Vibes Only.” That’s something I sorely need as I consider going back into house arrest even though I am vaxxed.
Another good choice since it’s outside.
The art walk will start Boulder Avenue and 1st Street. See original works from 40 artists. I love the art walk because there’s culture here as well as casinos.
Tonight’s feature artist is Mowgli. He’s covered walls tagged by graffiti with commissioned murals.
The fun starts at 5 and goes to 11. Always FREE.
FREE Pool Party in North Las Vegas

I bought my North Las Vegas rental on Memorial Day 2002. I never cease to be amazed at the kewl things this little city has to offer.
Western Elite is sponsoring a FREE end-of-summer pool party at Silver Mesa Recreation Center Saturday. What a great idea when the mercury will hit 107. Commissioner Marilyn Kirkpatrick and Councilman Scott Black conjured up the idea.
Starts at 4. There will be a DJ and raffles. Plus food trucks. (not FREE).
More FREE stuff: Haircuts and school back packs…for the first 250. Because school starts in person next week!
Since this is a government thing, you can also get a FREE covid test and a FREE vaccination.
P.S. If delta weren’t flying around, I’d be at Park MGM tonight to hear the blues with Joe Bonamassa, the best living blues guitarist in my opinion. I first heard him play on a PBS special, PBS being my favorite TV station in Las Vegas. Unfortunately, this show is far from FREE.
Have a great, safe, healthy week-end, Las Vegas.
