Merry Christmas, Las Vegas!
I have a good idea what you are doing tomorrow. I hope Santa brought you everything you needed.
But some might want to get out of the house after awhile. If you want some fun things to do, here are some FREE options. Because you know a lot of the most fun things are very pricey. Like the Raiders-Broncos game Sunday. Cheapest seat is $159 assuming you can find one.
Buckle up, Las Vegas ’cause here we go.
Be Amazed at the Ethel M Cactus Garden-Just Don’t Touch (Henderson)
Ethel M Chocolates makes its ethereal concoctions at a factory right here in Henderson. Outside the gift store sits the largest botanical cactus garden in Nevada.
The garden houses over 300 species of plants over three acres. This being a desert (where they make dessert ha! ha!) half the plants are cacti. The rest are succulents and desert trees and shrubs.
These plants have been there for a very long time. If you have never gotten up close and personal with a cactus, trust me, their sharp needles hurt. Since these cacti are way bigger than mine, I would assume they really hurt.
So that’s why it’s so amazing that at Christmas time the gardeners festoon this biological warfare with Christmas lights. (They must get hazard pay and wear Kevlar.) The cactus garden at night during Christmas is one of the most glorious things to see in Las Vegas.
Because of covid, you know those invisible thingies in the air that have fancy Greek names, you have to make a reservation to stroll the garden.
Celebrate the Soul of Kwanzaa (West Las Vegas)
It’s Boxing Day in Great Britain but Soul of Kwanzaa Day in Las Vegas.
Show up to the West Las Vegas Library at 3 pm to enjoy the musical celebration.
There will be drumming by Olabisi African Dance & Drum Ensemble. Chimini Branch and Brandon Summers will harmonize. And there will be a guest performance by the City of Las Vegas’s ARTSWORKS Program.
Free, of course.
P.S. Here’s a secret. The Clark County Libraries have some of the best FREE arts offerings in the city. I will share.
Get a FREE Covid test (UNLV)
Yes, Omicron has come to Vegas for Christmas. There were 1,107 new cases yesterday here in Clark County, the highest single day increase since July 28.
If you need a FREE test, you can get one Sunday through Thursday nights at UNLV. These are the real deal, a self-swab PCR test.
Show up at the Paradise Campus parking lot on Trop just east of Paradise Road between 5:30 and 10:30 p.m.
You do have to set up an account at Color, the lab providing the testing service. That way the lab can email or text your results.
Maybe a negative PCR test is the best Christmas gift of all.
If you want to spend money this week-end, go see Fluffy at the Mirage, Mannheim Steamroller at the Orleans or Maroon 5 at the Cosmopolitan.
Have a Merry Christmas, Las Vegas!
