The Shelby factory and musuem are moving to the Strip

We baby boomers grew up loving our muscle cars. We venerated Carroll Shelby, the designer of the Shelby Mustang.

Shelby founded Shelby American in 1962. The race car driver turned entrepreneur moved the company from South California to Las Vegas in the mid-1990s. Today it is the only automobile manufacturer in Nevada. (Bet you didn’t know that about Vegas, did you?) The factory builds between 50 and 75 Shelby Cobras a year and modifies an additional 450 cars annually for devotees. For between $10,000 and $150,000, the facility will beef up any Ford, including my lowly Focus.

Shelby American is moving from its five facilities out in North Las Vegas at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway  into at a 135,000 square foot facility just two miles south of the Strip near Sunset Road (which is also close to McCarran International Airport). The new facility will:

  • Modify cars
  • Build new cars
  • Feature a Shelby museum
  • Offer factory tours
  • Display its vintage car collection
  • Operate a gift shop (of course)

So why go to Detroit to see how muscle cars are built? Vegas is much more fun!

The new facility opens in November.
