What do Michael Jackson and Maurice Ravel have in common, other than they are both musical icons?
Answer: Tonight the Henderson Symphony Orchestra is featuring the music of both at a FREE concert. Bolero goes Billie Jean! Pop goes classical and classical goes pop!
Actually, it’s Thriller since Halloween is just around the corner. And Bolero, Ravel’s landmark composition.
Here’s some trivia for you: The musical name for how Bolero works is called a Mannheim roller, named after the German city. The music starts with a single instrument that introduces the melody. Then other instruments enter, one at a time, showcasing their timbre and often changing the tempo. At the end it’s a magnificent melange of everyone!
Think Peter and the Wolf for kids or the theme song from NCIS.
Movie-makers love using Bolero to build up the tension in a scene.
As for Michael, Thriller is just a classic, Halloween or not. I can’t imagine how it will sound with violins and tubas, but I can’t wait.
The Henderson Pavilion is the perfect place for this FREE, I did say FREE fall concert. You can sit under the roof in comfortable theater seats. Or, bring a blanket and lay on your back, watching the stars on a chill October night. The weather could NOT be more perfect!
And who says there is no culture only casinos in Las Vegas?
Have a GREAT week-end, Las Vegas.
