FREE Fun in Las Vegas: 4-Letter Friday

The best parts of last Sunday’s Oscars performance are here in Las Vegas this week-end. (Hopefully without any violence or drama.) Billie Eilish and Amy Schumer both have shows. Eilish’s show is sold out but the tickets range for $58 for general admission (standing only) to $253.

Tickets to top shows are spendy.

But fear not, loyal readers. The Las Vegas talent bench is deep. There is plenty to do this week-end for FREE.

Buckle up ’cause here we go!

Enjoy Jazz Under the Stars (Northwest)

Four jazz pros make awesome music. Photo: Mark Dalzell

Saturday night the city of Las Vegas kicks off its 2022 “Concert in the Park” series.

Jazz Juice makes music under the stars. Mark Dalzell (the drummer) and his three bandmates (keys, upright bass and wind instruments) perform old-style jazz. I remember hearing music like this in the jazz clubs in New York City in the early 1970s.

Most of their songs are original compositions. Each musician gets his turn to shine. Here is a link to one of my favorites, Brazilian Suite. https://vimeo.com/236671566?embedded=true&source=vimeo_logo&owner=1058638

These guys have made music with Kenny Loggins, Chaka Kahn, Donna Summer and the Drifters, among others.

The best part, besides the fact that the concert is FREE, is that it’s outside under the stars. Music always sounds better when the stars twinkle in a clear black sky.

The weather in Las Vegas is perfect right now for an outdoor concert. Enjoy before the oven gets turned on!

The concert starts at 7 at Estelle Neal Park, which is off Rainbow and West Tropical Parkway. Bring blankets and low-backed chairs.

Listen to Music in a Casino Lounge (Downtown)

Stylin’! Photo: Golden Nugget

All Las Vegas casinos have fancy lounges where folks can converse while savoring hand-crafted (and expensive) cocktails.

Fortunately, the music is FREE.

If you are downtown, head over to the Rush Lounge at the Golden Nugget. (Did you know this was Steve Wynn’s first casino?) It’s a secret pleasure.

The music is top notch. Tonight hear Ashley Red. It’s a high-energy dance band out of Miami that’s settled in Vegas. They do covers and have original music too.

The musicians are loud enough to block out the casino noises.

The club is open until 2 am. Enjoy!

Watch Those Muscular Stallions (Real Horses people!) at the Southpoint Arena (South)

I don’t really know what a snaffle bit is. But I don’t care. This is a horse show featuring the most beautiful stallions around. And they are gorgeous.

The competition starts tomorrow (Saturday) at 9 am. But the finals start at noon.

The show is FREE.

There is also a Western Gift Show. This is not FREE. Do not enter if you don’t want to spend money because the crafts are as gorgeous as the stallions.

P.S. The Grammys are here in Las Vegas on Sunday. That means a lot of celebrities are in town. I love going down to Caesars and just watching. You never know who you will see.

P.P.S. Looking for a place to stay in Vegas that’s NOT a hotel? Stay at my just renovated condo. It’s 3.8 miles from the Mandalay Bay, 1 mile from UNLV and 2 miles from University Medical Center. It sleeps six. And there’s covered parking if you’re driving.

Have a great week-end, Las Vegas!
