This blog is about FREE Fun in Las Vegas. But today is Veterans Day which is about FREE and is usually not FUN. To every veteran reading this blog, THANK YOU for serving.
My father was a sniper in World War II. I didn’t find that out until he died at 89 when my sister and I will going through old photos and papers. I can’t imagine the horror of combat.
Fortunately for us living in the land of freedom, the only real hassle we have is selecting what we are going to do this weekend. Because, to paraphrase Miguel Brown, “So many things, how can I chose? So many choices? How can I lose?”
If you want to pay to have fun, you can hear Post Malone, laugh with George Lopez or gorge at the Las Vegas Pizza Festival.
But if you want FREE fun, buckle up ’cause here we go!
Cowboy Up at the Las Vegas Days Rodeo (Downtown)

When November arrives in Las Vegas, so do the cowboys. Last weekend the Professional Bull Riders debuted their team competition championship. (I was there and it was awesome. You can take the girl out of Texas but you can’t take Texas out of the girl. I did join MAGA-Mothers Against Greg Abbott, but he won since I vote in Nevada.) But I digress.
PBR events are always pricey. But you can see great rodeo today and tomorrow FREE. Welcome the return of Las Vegas Days Rodeo. It used to be called Helldorado Days, but the marketing folks changed the name for better SEO.
The rodeo celebrates Las Vegas’s history. We were a cowboy culture before the Mob arrived who then got bucked off by the corporate crowd.
This is a real rodeo, sanctioned by both the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association.
The events include:
- Bull riding
- Barrel racing
- Break-away
- Team roping
- Tie-down roping
- Steer wrestling
- Saddle bronc riding
- Bareback riding
The other contests sound just as kewl:
- Whiskerino contest
- Coloring contest
- Mutton busting
All the excitement happens at the Core Arena, which is adjacent to the Plaza Hotel & Casino.
Attendance is FREE but you do have to sign up at this link: https://plazatix.com/details.php?eid=80.
Gates open at 5. The action starts at 6. Today Friday and tomorrow.
Spend Time at a Doggie Event (Southwest)

All y’all know I am a dog lover. So if I can spend time with my dog and other dog lovers, well, I am in animal heaven.
I can do that tomorrow Saturday at Paws in The Park 22. There will be pet vendors, rescue groups and food trucks. You can go home with a new dog!
But the real attraction is it’s really a big Las Vegas outdoor concert that you can enjoy with your pet. (Can be a cat or bird. No discrimination here.)
Here is the line up:
- 11 am Social Order (synthpop)
- Noon Ian Flanigan (a finalist on The Voice/country)
- 12:50 pm Bat Out Of Hell (rock ‘n roll)
- 2 pm Alec Benjamin (top 40)
- 3 pm Soul of Motown (Motown)
All FREE.
Desert Breeze Park from 10-4.
I told you Vegas has a deep bench of talent!
Take Your Child to a Yoga Class (Arts District)

I wish my mom took me to a yoga class when I was a kid.
Today’s Las Vegas kids can attend a Kids Yoga class every Sunday starting this Sunday.
Be on your mat for the 45-minute class at 9 am in front of Mothership at Fergson’s Downtown. Jessica Castillo of Blooming Minds leads the practice.
Parents: if you are not taking the class in the back, the powers that be suggest you get coffee or explore Ferguson’s Downtown far, far away from the class so you don’t freak out your offspring.
There will be FREE hot chocolate for the kids afterwards.
The class is FREE but there’s a suggested donation of $5.
Experience the Netball Championships (West)

If you think American basketball is fast moving, watch a netball game, the Australian version of the sport. You have three seconds to pass or shoot. That’s even shorter than bull riding’s eight second qualified ride.
This weekend the 2022 US Open Netball Championships will crown a winner. Teams from 22 states as well as Australia, Canada, Fiji, Hong Kong, Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago, Namibia, New Zealand, South African, Uganda and the UK will compete for the championship.
You can watch the games in person. FREE. At the Tarkanian Basketball Academy, which is near Palace Station.
Another great reason for living in Vegas: All the kewl sporting events come to you.
P.S. I wonder what those visitors think of Las Vegas….
Have a great weekend, Las Vegas.
P.S. Veterans: There are some really good food specials for you today. Grimali’s Pizza is offering 25% off. You can enjoy a FREE buffet at the SouthPoint. And Carrabbas is offering a FREE beverage and appetizer. Lots of options. THANKS again for serving.
