Thanksgiving is still two weeks away, but hey, it’s not too early to start the Christmas festivities.
Tonight kicks off one of my favorite holiday traditions: The annual holiday parade at Downtown Summerlin. It’s the Las Vegas version (kind of) of New Orleans’s Mardi Gras parade.
The magical spectacle features Mardi Gras-quality floats, toy soldiers, snowflake princesses (not the put down kind), dancing nutcrackers and whatever else the organizers decide to parade our way. The parade snakes through the streets of Downtown Summerlin as holiday music punctuates the air.
The parade starts at Park Centre Drive.
FREE!
The parade starts at 6 pm. The parade marches through the streets of Downtown Summerlin every Friday and Saturday night through December 21.
Even though it was 75 degrees at noon today, the ice skating rink at Downtown Summerlin opens tonight too! Rock Rink, located near The Pavilion at the Lawn, sits in the shadow of the shopping center’s 40-foot Christmas tree. You can ice skate until January 20th.
Skate rentals start at $15. Tickets to the rink are $15, which are good for two hours of skating.
I hear from Santa’s helpers (the subordinate Clauses) that Santa Claus loves shopping at Downtown Summer.in. He will be holding court at Santa Claus’s Chalet in the Macy’s Promenade. You can whisper your holiday gift dreams on Santa’s lap for FREE. However, if you want to memorialize the moment in film, the photo packages start at $29.99.
If you decide “forget photographing the kids, I want the dog!” This is your place. Pet photos with Santa are available every night between 7 and 9 pm through December 17. Once again, the photo packages start at $29.99.
Growing up Jewish, as a young child I thought Christmas was an American shopping holiday. Downtown Summerlin hasn’t forgotten the tribe. The first night of Hannukah is December 23. Join in lighting the Menorah.
After the parade tonight, walk across the street to the Las Vegas Ballpark for a screening of Elf. (It starts at 7:05 pm.) Admission is a massive $2 per person. All the concession stands at the Ballpark will be open, which are definitely not free.
