Fall has arrived in Las Vegas. I know because the mercury is hovering in the high 90s. But the entertainment options are still scorching.
Entertainment in Las Vegas can be very pricey. But don’t worry, dear readers. It’s my job to find the best FREE entertainment in town. And there’s lots!
Buckle up ’cause here we go!
Boogie to Zowie Bowie (South)
If you have never seen Zowie Bowie (zoe-ey bo-ey), you must fix that this weekend. I remember when lead singer Chris Phillips arrived from Arizona to start his Las Vegas career. I became a fan in those early days at the Showroom (now long gone) at Green Valley Ranch Casino. Phillips also did a Big Band showcase at the Luxor, once upon a time.
Tomorrow night (Saturday) the plan plays at the lounge at the M Resort. Originally called the Ravello Lounge, the resort has rechristened it Amp’d. And Chris will be christening it (groan. groan. pun.)
Zowie Bowie always has a willowly young woman with a big voice to sing with Phillips. He always snags the city’s top musicians.
The group does everything, from Sinatra to what’s hot today.
There’s a small dance floor but Zowie Bowie will get it packed.
Get ready to boogie. The band plays from 9 to midnight. FREE.
And yes, the parking is FREE too.
Scream Your Head Off (with a Friend) (Off Strip)
You would have to PAY me to do this. But many of you will think this is tres fun. After all, you do get the best view of the Las Vegas Strip from this high up.
Tuesday is National Roller Coaster Day. The STRAT is offering buy one, get one FREE tickets on all its thrill rides. They include:
- The Big Shot. It catapults 16 riders from the 921-foot-high platform up to the tower’s mast at 1,081 feet…and then down again. Fast.
- Insanity. You dangle from the side of the building at 900 feet up. Then it spins you in the open air at speeds up to three Gs. Insanity indeed!
- X-Scream. This roller coaster teeters over the edge of the SkyPod at 866 feet above Las Vegas Boulevard. Then you go down head first 27 feet over the edge of the tower. You do this again and again.
Ok, you are only saving $5 but it’s still FREE right?
From 2 to 10 pm.
Root for Our Raiders (Summerlin)
Why can’t Congress get along like the sports teams in Las Vegas?
Our Las Vegas Raiders play their first home game against the Vikings Sunday after whomping the Jaguars last week. First thing: Locals: Stay off the 15 all day Sunday unless you want to have an unplanned tailgate in your car. Gridlock baby!
One of the best places to watch the game is at the Las Vegas Ballpark where our Las Vegas Aviators play ball. The ballpark has a huge scoreboard where you can watch the game from the field. It’s actually the largest video board in minor league baseball. It’s 31 feet high by 126 feet wide.
I’ve actually taken a yoga class on the infield one Sunday morning and watched the instructor on the screen.
And there’s ample FREE parking!
Enjoy the Aging Wellness Expo (Summerlin)
I guess the youngins think everyone over 50 needs help “living life to the fullest after 50.” I personally don’t remind 50, but I digress.
I will forgive them because the Aging Wellness Expo showcases hundreds of interesting vendors. Topics include:
- Financial planning
- Health and wellness
And who doesn’t need expert help in any of these areas?????
I am particularly interested in the speakers; they are professors at UNLV specializing in brain health.
It’s in the Ballroom at Red Rock Casino. Tomorrow. From 9-3.
FREE admission. FREE parking.
Have a great weekend Las Vegas!
